History of Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts is known by many for being a mix of different martial arts. We know this can be a bit confusing, so let’s start with a definition.

Definition of mixed martial arts (MMA): a combat sport in which participants are permitted to use various martial art techniques for fighting, wrestling and boxing. This also includes kickboxing, judo and karate.

This full-contact combat-sport is exhilarating to learn and practice! Step up your game and feel like you’re part of the UFC by learning techniques such as grappling, striking and kicks.

So where did this ‘melting pot’ sport originate from? It was popularized in the 1990s, however, the sport first began in the early 20th century when mixed fighting contests began taking place throughout Japan, Taiwan and other Asian countries. Later on, in the 1980s, the first regulated league in the United States began holding tournaments until it was banned, shortly after in some states. The sport rose to popularity in 1993, with the introduction of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) promotion company from Brazil to the U.S. This league’s tournaments were not characterized by very many rules until recently when it was regulated. Regular televised specials still run today and the fighters are professional boxers and wrestlers.
